Another little study. Colored pencil on paper. It had been a long time since I had a colored pencil in my hand. I forgot just how nice and smooth Prismacolors are.
This is the last time you’ll see it before the opening of Collider at the PSU Littman Gallery. The show is curated by Jeff Jahn, and contains a slew of fantastic Portland abstract painters. Opens First Thursday in September.
While waiting for freshly primed canvases to dry, I decided to combine some scrap pieces of wood together by covering them in glue. Tomorrow I will see if I was successful.
You can see the red under-painting beneath the pattern, which matches the red used on the hanging rag.
This one is getting close. Almost done. Very close. The pattern hanging on the top right will likely be replaced with something else.
Details as it stands currently:
48 x 36 inches
Enamel, acrylic, pencil, primed and unprimed canvas
The sun finally decided to come out today, so I was actually able to throw open the door of the studio and get some real light in the place.

I got bored and made a pseudo-Gerhard Richter squeegee painting.
The beginnings of some new, smaller paintings. I’m using a very bright cadmium orange underpainting, which is partly inspired by my buddy Grant Hottle’s vibrant underpaintings he has been working with lately.
It remains to be seen how much of the orange will remain after a few more layers of paint.
